The East Meath Tour 2009.
Sunday Jan 18th 2009
The first round of the leisure league went ahead on Sunday last
in spite of the weather. After carefully considering the conditions
and assessing the safety risks it was decided to continue with the
event. The intended route was abandoned after a phone call from
Kevin Byrne who warned of the road conditions in the Summerhill
area.
17 riders turned up to the start in the Papal Cross Car Park, some
of whom had travelled a great distance just to take part.
The morning was bright although very cold, it was dry at the start,
with a stiff breeze from the south west.
The revised route took us out along the Strawberry Beds to Lucan
and on to Celbridge. The sky looked threatening as we approached
Barberstown Castle roundabout and as we turned right for Maynooth
a combination of sleet and rain made the going tough. In Maynooth
the remains of the previous nights snow was visible by the roadside
and on the footpaths but the road was clear. With the wind at our
back and the sun making the odd appearance, the return journey was
quite pleasant.
The speed on the outward journey was kept at leisure pace with many
riders taking turns at the front. The total distance was 30 miles
with 2 points being awarded for the event.
Weather permitting, the intended route will be run off next Sunday
as a non-league event. Starting at 10 o’clock and finishing
in plenty of time for members to attend the ecumenical service in
the afternoon.
The next round of the league is the North Dublin Tour on Sunday
15th February.
Just a reminder that only IVCA members with insurance are eligible
to take part in Leisure League events.
