IVCA Track Championships 2008 - By Terry Cromer

Just as we were about to hang up our wheels in frustration after a rain frustrated Track Season along comes the IVCA Track Championships along with a glorious day of sunshine. Normally when riders go to a track event they have forgotten something important like helmets or shoes but this it was that little used item for the past two summers... sun cream.

This was the inaugural Championships based on the Masters principle of age groups and this year it was decided to attempt 3 age groups 40-49, 50-59 and 60+. Coming a few weeks after the National Vets Omnium here was a chance for the Veteran Track riders to compete against each other. The largest number of veteran riders signed on for this event showing how popular track riding is becoming for the older rider. Many riders are dusting off the old track bike thats hanging up in the garage and those that missed it in their younger years have found track bikes being so simple are a hell of a lot cheaper than a competitive road bike. It was also encouraging to note that the majority of riders were IVCA members.

There were 5 Track disciplines 500m TT, Sprint, Pursuit, Team Sprint and Scratch race to be competed for, so a busy days racing was in order. Paddy Davis, unable to compete, was the Starter and aided by other Track Commission members kept the day flowing through a long programme of sprint and endurance events. Maureen and Kate Cromer kept everybody going with sandwiches, hot drinks and of course apple pie and cream.

All in all a superb day and start for this inaugural event. A special word of thanks must go to all the members of the Track Commission who helped run a very smooth day. As it becomes more difficult to find safe road circuits near the city many riders are turning to the track to provide safe, fast racing in a controlled environment. With the growth of Masters and Veteran track racing it will be hoped that this event will be expanded in the future to more than one day.

The results

500m TT
The day started with the 500TT and all 23 riders who signed on competed in this event. This was a straight final so all riders were determined to start the day well with fresh legs.

First rider of the day, Hugh Davis put down a time of 41.37 to win the 60+ Category which remained the best time into the 50-59 category until Terry Cromer set an unofficial National record time time of 38.50 winning this category. This was to be short lived as the last of the younger riders Liam Collins broke the record again with a blistering 38.05 to win the 40-49 category.

Sprint
Next up was the 200m TT Sprint qualifier again the trio of Hugh Davis, Terry Cromer and Liam Collins took the fastest times in each age category.

The 40-49 Sprint competition was hard fought with 12 riders battling it out through 3 rounds of sprint matches to get to the final. It quickly became obvious that the fastest riders in the 200m qualifying TT were going to end up fighting it out for the medals.

The most entertaining match of the day was between John Beatty, Lloyd Berry and Willie Cannon. LLoyd and Willie started to battle it out and left John by 100 metres, while they played cat and mouse high on bend 1 and 2 John came back strongly and went right under their noses before they realised leaving them unable to answer. A classic move!

In the 60+ finals Paddy Fitzimons made a strong challenge to get around Hugh Davis but was held off on the line with Phil Ormrod coming in 3rd. In the 50-59 final Alec Darragh and Terry Cromer pulled away early to distance Noel Tonge but as Alec took Terry up the banking, Terry saw his opportunity and dived underneath him to open a big gap and cruised towards the line. Noel Tonge put on a huge burst of speed to try to close the gap but was unsuccessful.

The 40-49 final for Bronze saw tired legs with John Moran holding off Ger Ivory. The decider for Gold and Silver was extremely tactical with both riders trying to hold off attacking until as late as possible.

Eventaully Liam Collins made a savage jump on bend 2 which got him a small advantage and held the distance until the 200m line when Kieran Smith had gradually caught up with him. Coming down the home straight Kieran made his bid and took the Gold by less that half a wheel.

Pursuit
This is where the older riders get a a bit of a break as the over 50s only have to ride 2km while those under that age have to endure 3km.

The over 60s had the added benefit of a straight final as there were only 3 riders. The 40 -49 had to ride tactically as they new they possibly had to save some energy for the final. Alan Neenan showed his strength at this disclipine with a 4mins 28.99 qualifying time 5 second faster than Paul Swenarton.

In the final it was an incredibly close match with both riders neck and neck lap after lap until with 2 laps to go Alan was slightly ahead. When the bell rang Alan had about 5 metres advantage but he could not afford to let up and came across the line a fraction of a second faster than his qualifying time.

In the run off for Bronze Lloyd Berry made the catch on Dermot Moyne on the 5th lap to take 3rd.

20 Lap Scratch Race
All riders rode together in this race. This was a race of tactics and stamina with some of the recent IVCA track recruits finding the pace much faster than any of the road events.

Hugh Davis and Paddy Fitzimons showed that age is not a hindrance in this event by placing 3rd and 5th respectively overall.

Team Sprint 135+

The Final event was a Team Sprint with 4 teams. As this was new to most of the riders it was an example how riders could organise themselves into a competitive team. 2 teams of 3 riders lined up opposite each other on the track and when the gun goes every team trying to get on each others wheel in the search of shelter until it's their turn at the front. This is all about consistency of speed and the Team of Hugh Davis, Willie Cannon and Paul Swenarton got it right to beat the Team of Susan O'Mara, Paddy Fitzimons and Liam Collins
