In his address
to the 33 assembled riders at the Papal Cross Car Park on Sunday
20th January Gay Farnan welcomed them to the 1st round of the Leisure
League and hoped they would continue to support the League and would
enjoy the events that had been arranged for them.
He also thanked all the riders who took part in last years League
and congratulated Frank Rooney on his second win in succession.
He also pointed out that the IVCA were focusing on safety this year
and with the assistance of some members were finalising a safety
statement that would be published on the web site in the near future.
On the reverse of the route map for the event today were some safety
notes that all should familiarize themselves with. When we are out
cycling we all have a duty of care towards ourselves, other cyclist
and to respect all road users.
Gay also reminded all present about the Ecumenical Service due to
take place at 3.00pm.

Before setting off a minutes silence was observed for our friend
and former Leisure Director Dick O’Brien. Dick was not only
a great cyclist but also a great organizer and the success of the
Leisure League today is in no small way due to the healthy state
that Dick handed it over. May he rest in peace.
The route took us out the Ashtown Gate on to the Navan Road, through
Clonee, Dunboyne and out the Summerhill Road. We turned left for
Moynalvey to the Trim Road and returned to the Park again along
the Navan Road. The total distance was 40 miles and took approx
2 hours 45 minutes to complete. There was a slight wind on the way
out and a light shower before we left the Park other than that it
was dry throughout.
Two points were awarded for this event.
The next event is the North Dublin Tour on
Sunday 17th February.
