Liam Horner Memorial Cycle Sunday 15th April.

The day promised sunshine when the early morning mist lifted, as a large group of 65 cyclists gathered in Clonee. The group ranged from ex international riders to a young lad out with his dad to take part in an organised cycle for the first time,

Shortly after 10.00 after a brief welcome to all, the group set off with a Garda escort car leading the way. Having the Garda car out front was a great advantage and led greatly to a feeling of safety as approaching cars pulled into the side or slowed down appreciably as the group passed by.

A steady pace of around 27kph was maintained as we headed to Summerhill, around by Bective and into Kilmessan, heading for the climb of the day over the hill of Tara. The one puncture that occurred was quickly taken back to the peleton by Mary Byrne in the back up van. As we approached Tara we were reminded of how the riders in today’s Paris – Roubaix would feel as the grass growing up the centre of the road meant that one had to be very alert to find a good track along the narrow remaining road.

The climb started and there was general agreement that it would be climbed at “Piano” pace. This lasted for about 100 yards until someone decided that they wanted to be first to the top, so inevitably this brought a quick reaction and it was everyone for themselves to the top.

We had a short break at the top of Tara Hill as we all re-grouped, unfortunately the light mist hadn’t as yet cleared so we were denied the view. We then swooped downhill across the Navan Road, again thanks to the Gardai all traffic on the main road was stopped as we crossed the main road. It was then another short climb up to Skreen castle before we turned towards Ratoath and home.

The pace increased considerably as we headed towards Ratoath as a group of approx. 15 riders drew away from the main group. They battled along in the crosswind with several individuals attempting to leave the rest in their wake but without success. All arrived together back in Clonee. The rest of the riders came home at their own pace within a few minutes. A very enjoyable spin and workout was had by all.
