There was a good turn out of 18 cyclists for the East Coast Tour on Sunday 15 th of May. This tour is always a good test for anyone taking part in the Wicklow 200 as it takes in some of the climbs that will be tackled on the W200. The weather was perfect for cycling with sunshine for most of the day and only light winds. The start was from Merrion Square at 9.00am then out through Blackrock, Shankill and into Bray before the first climb over Windgate. It then followed the coast road to Kilcoole and Newcastle before crossing the new motorway bridge into Ashford and on to the climb up the Devils Glen. There was a tea stop in Roundwood before making the return journey through Kilmacanoge and Bray and back to Merrion Square along the N11. The section from the city out to Bray and back was very busy on the day with huge volumes of traffic and were it not for the cycle lanes which are normally covered with small stones that play havoc with narrow tyres it would be almost impossible to run this event in its present form. Consideration will have to be given to starting the event from a different location next year.
